The ultimate guide to macros
Share
If you don’t quite “get” macros yet, this guide is here to make it easier to understand. Let’s dive in:
Carbohydrates — The Fuel Macro
Carbohydrates are your body’s primary source of energy.
(If you need a nap every day and have been trying to cut carbs that's a good indicator that you are not eating enough energy. If have too much belly fat that's a good indicator that you have too much energy.
OR you stress too much and cortisol is an issue.
Without enough carbs, you experience the 3 F’s:
- **Fogginess**
- **Forgetfulness**
- **Fatigue**
Carbs break down into glycogen, which is stored in your muscles. During an intense workout, if your body can’t find enough glycogen, it breaks down your muscles instead.
If you’ve been cutting carbs and aren’t seeing results, let this be a wake-up call!
Fats — The Support Macro
Fats are crucial.
- They protect your organs.
- They play a part in the recovery process and muscle strength.
- They regulate your metabolism.
- They help produce natural growth hormones, which are much better than artificial ones.
Without enough fats, many bodily functions get thrown out of balance. They even help your body process protein, carbs, vitamins, and minerals.
Knowing that, why would you ever want to go ‘low fat’ again?
Protein — The Strength Macro
Protein helps you build muscle, feel fuller longer, and metabolize carbs.
If you tend to crash and burn, you may not be eating enough protein. Don’t overload on protein because you might not need as much as you think, but always make sure you’re getting enough, or nothing else is going to work!
Protein also helps your body repair muscle tissue after workouts. Since exercise creates more stress on your body as you age, this macronutrient is essential.
Now, whatever you do:
You can have protein bars and protein shakes. I have 1 or 2 shakes a day and sometimes a protein bar but that is NOT the main source of protein. Don’t rely on protein bars or shakes throughout the day!
