Running is not the only form of exercise, I too have really bad knees and I had to stop running to save them and find other way to exercise.
Running causes a higher amount of impact on your knees than other cardio exercises. It would be a safer idea to switch to more low-impact cardio exercises if you have pain, such as walking or walking up incline at a low speed. Weather you run fast for 30 minute or walk for 45 the amount of calories burned is almost identical. Some low impact cardio exercises include swimming, rowing, biking, walking, the elliptical and stair master machines what I found best is low impact HIIT exercise like Beachbody on Demand LIIFT4 workout. I thing cardio alone is really boring and being a mom of 2, I don’t have time to spend 2 hours at the gym with bad knees that’s why I do LIIFT4. It’s a combo of weights and cardio and I adjust the level as I see fit. If my knees hurt then I don’t jump as high or squat as low. That’s the beauty of being able to workout at your own comfort level. Where with all these other machines you have to adjust them or spend more time on them.
Even if you already experience problems, exercising the muscles surrounding the knee joints will help make your knees stronger and less susceptible to injury. Exercise also stimulates circulation and improves the body’s ability to manage inflammation more effectively. Some of these leg strengthening exercises include straight-leg raises, hamstring curls, and step ups. If you need additional tips on low-impact exercise, please let me know.
